About the book:

Choral Voices: Ethnographic Imaginations of Sound and Sacrality is about sacred and secular choirs in Goa and Shillong across churches, seminaries, schools, auditoriums, classrooms, reality TV shows, and festivals. Voice and genre emerge as social objects annotated by tradition, nostalgia, and innovation. Piety literally and metaphorically shapes the Christian lifeworld, predominantly those belonging to the Presbyterian and Catholic denominations. Indigeneity structures the political and cultural motifs in the making of the Christian musical traditions. Located at the intersection of Sociology, Anthropology, and Ethnomusicology, the choral voices emplace 'affect' and the visual-aural dispatch. Thus, sonic spectrum holds space for indigenous and global musicality.

This ethnographic work will be useful for scholars researching music and sound studies, religious studies, cultural anthropology, and sociology of India.

About The Harmony Chorus:

Placed at India’s Top 8 in a national level reality singing show “Rising Star” on Colors TV, The Harmony Chorus directed by Sandra Oberoi has travelled internationally as cultural ambassadors representing TRUTH, GOODNESS and BEAUTY. The group is committed to their calling - making excellent music together to bring joy and serve the community. Over the years, several members of this group have individually won numerous prestigious awards, performed at Carnegie Hall and concert halls across Europe, and earned scholarships to top music universities and conservatories around the world. From Western Classical, Jazz, Gospel, Pop, A Cappella, Musical Theatre, World Music, Indian Folk music and Bollywood this versatile choir loves to explore different music styles. They will be leaving to the UK shortly for a concert tour in London and the Isle of Man over the end of August and beginning of September 2023, collaborating with several music organisations and premiere choirs in the region.
