Jobeth Warjri engages Lian Dousel in conversation about the horror and the human in Lian’s debut collection, Peace in the Land of the Dead. In the twelve genre-bending stories, Dousel plays with folktales, magic realism and horror, infusing them into the mundane.

About the book:
In this debut collection, Lian Dousel carries you to the edges of Manipur, acquainting you with the quotidian lives of a people India knows little of, with folktales deeply embedded into the land. The stories are equally surreal and gritty, layered with a tinge of horror here and a tide of emotion there. Our protagonists encounter demons that decide their fate and hear laments of sentient woodlands, wonder what if and find out too late; they confront us with the fragility and endurance of human life.
Meet the author:
Lian Dousel is a writer from Lamka, Manipur. He has a master’s degree in Literary Art from Ambedkar University, Delhi. His fiction has appeared in various outlets such as Hammock, The Little Journal of Northeast India, and Lekha Writers. Peace in the Land of the Dead is his debut collection. He is currently based in Delhi.
About the moderator:
Jobeth Ann Warjri is a writer, teacher and researcher from Laitkor, Meghalaya. She is the editor of the anthology, The Greatest Stories from the Northeast Ever Told and the winner of The Book Review Literary Trust Short Story Competition 2020. She lives in Bangalore where she teaches writing at the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Vidyashilp University.
