Glass That Measures Grief

A glass breaks;
And for the next five days
Lots of work are to be done –
The floor has to be cleaned;
I keep slipping
On the water that’s on the floor,
Fall into the broken pieces
And with each fall
Give birth to a thousand more,
From one stained piece.
The sixth day
Is like waking up from a fever.
With trembling hands
I put the pieces together
And only then throw them away
Seeing them whole for one last time
Before they scatter,
Though they scatter beyond memory.

But my hands keep trembling
With cuts, with cold,
And so the next glass breaks too soon;
Thus the cycle of grief is wound more closely,
And completes a rotation faster,
Although the gloom lengthens each time.
