Book Launch | ‘A Moving Line’: Evolving Identities in Comics and Graphic Narratives

Join us for the book launch of A Moving Line, a celebration of India’s rich history of visual storytelling. Comic creator and visual artists Rahil Mohsin and Mia Jose will be in conversation with designer Kriti Monga to reflect on how storytelling in comics and graphic narratives have evolved and the many nuances and developments in it. 

This will be followed by an interactive Q&A with the audience.

About the book: 

Stories, whether written or drawn, are always moving, reshaped by every generation that inherits and retells them. India has a long and rich history of visual storytelling, from temple walls and painted scrolls to comics, graphic novels and webcomics. Published by the Museum of Art and Photography, A Moving Line traces this history, revealing unexpected connections between works that are rarely considered together.

The eight essays and eleven graphic narratives in this collection range from the timeless to the future-forward. Bringing together contributions by scholars, practitioners and artists, this book explores the many nuances and developments in sequential storytelling.

A Moving Line celebrates a medium that has always been, and continues to be, inherently visual.

Meet the speakers:

Rahil Mohsin is a Bengaluru-based comic creator and co-founder of Hallubol, the world’s first bilingual Dakhni-English comic series, created alongside children’s book creator Alankrita Amaya. His portfolio includes work with Scout Comics, Comixense, Pratham Books, Sufi Comics, and Room to Read. Inspired by the everyday lives of working-class Muslim communities, his work explores the Dakhni language, folklore, culture, and food traditions of South India through graphic narratives rooted in multilingual realities. His stories often blend humour, memory, and voices rarely seen in contemporary comics.

Mia Jose (she/they) is a trans visual artist, art director, researcher and devourer of all things camp and horror. After transitioning from an active legal practice, she now uses graphic narratives to probe questions of gender, inheritance and embodiment, informed by her identity and roots in Kerala. Her creative practice is tied to her research on visual narrative traditions in India, and she is especially interested in the emergence of comics as vehicles for queer and marginalised voices. Having published several comics of her own, she is currently splitting her time between a short comic on mental health through monsters and folklore, and a graphic novel exploring masculinity and insecurity in the context of her hometown.

Meet the moderator:

Kriti Monga brings over two decades of design experience to her multi-disciplinary practice, blending artistic expression, strategic design, and hands-on craftsmanship. The founder-director of the acclaimed Turmeric Design, her work spans brand building, book design, visual art, illustration, and mentorship. She also teaches professional design and typography programs globally.
