Dispatches From Champaca: September 2022

dispatches from Champaca

Hello fellow book lover,

Are you ready for the spooky month of October? As always, we’re going to enter October armed with books that match the eerie mood of the month 👻

We’re looking forward to revisiting The Birds And Other Stories, and Rebecca – both by  Daphne Du Maurier, an author who creates atmospheric worlds that we love. Another book we’re excited to dip into is Ghosts, Monsters, And Demons Of India by J. Furcifer Bhairav and Rakesh Khanna – which is an encyclopedia of evil entities and folkloric fiends from across India!

Apart from reading, this month, we’ve had some wonderful events and workshops at Champaca!

We began this month with the second Champaca Book Club meeting. On a warm Sunday morning, all of our book subscription members gathered – some in-person, and others virtually – to discuss the book we sent out in August: Aranyak by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. If being part of such a book club interests you, why not join our Champaca Book Subscription? We send out a curated monthly book box, and meet up to discuss what we thought of the books!

In early September, we had a packed house for a conversation between Yogesh Maitreya and Vijeta Kumar – centred around the important work that Panther's Paw does as an indie publisher of Dalit-Bahujan works. In that same week, we hosted 'Slowing Down’, a journaling workshop by Shubashree Sangameswaran, helping people relax, pay attention, and learn to use art as a tool to record experiences.

And finally, just when we thought September couldn’t get any better, our last event of the month had us reeling with joy! Our store was full of little children, scrunched up on the floor, drawing kittens squashing things ✍️🐾 , as Bijal Vachharajani and Rajiv Eipe, author and illustrator of Kitten Trouble did a book reading and art activity with them!

If you’re looking for a weekend book recommendation, you can always find tons of stacks to choose from on our social media, along with other updates from our store!

Until next time, happy reading!
