Dispatches from Champaca | March 2022

dispatches from Champaca

Dear fellow book lover,

Are you ready for the onslaught of summer? Like much else in life, for us it is an excuse to read. Find some shade or a cool corner, get ourselves a chilled glass of lemonade, and pick up a book that transports us away from the sapping heat. If you’re looking for a quintessentially summer book to read, don’t miss our reading list from a couple of years ago — we’re sure you’ll find something you’ll enjoy. And for the brave-hearted among you, we recommended a few books about climate change and the anthropocene.

Is there a book that spells summer for you? We’d love to hear about it!

March was an exciting month for us because our team got to meet in person, and make plans for the year ahead — thinking about our curation for upcoming months, planning amazing book events, and psst… choosing the new theme for the Champaca Book Subscription that we’ll unveil soon. It was a reminder that so much of what we do is not merely “selling” books. Rather it is about helping you, our community, discover new ways to read, and always find the right books at the right time.

Speaking of which, over on Instagram, we recently asked for your latest binge-watch so we could recommend books you would love. We had a blast doing this! In case you missed it, all our recommendations are up on Highlights for your browsing pleasure. We’ve not forgotten our music-loving bibliophiles either. On our blog, Thejaswi writes about The Lost Pianos of Siberia, our pick for the Champaca Book Subscription last October, and shares with you the perfect Spotify playlist to accompany the book, complete with what to listen to, when and why. Get the book in a special gift box, and also check out our cinema, music and dance collection.

In the constant up and down that is life, we re-opened our café in March, and it was unmitigated joy to have folks around in person, only to have to close the café and the bookstore this week for urgent repair work. As they say, c’est la vie! We open our doors again this weekend (April 2), and if you’re in Bangalore, please drop by. Have a cuppa, dig into a snack, chat with us about what to read next, and pick up your next book haul! For the rest of you, there is always our painstakingly put-together online bookshop, and believe us, it is no consolation prize.

Until next time, happy reading!
