About the Book:

Three Centuries of Travel Writing by Muslim Women is an important anthology edited by Siobhan Lambert-Hurley, Daniel Majchrowicz, and Sunil Sharma. Spanning three centuries and multiple languages, the book brings together rare and powerful travel accounts by Muslim women—pilgrims, students, reformers, and political actors—whose journeys challenge long-held assumptions about women’s mobility and voice in history.

By recovering and translating these writings, the editors illuminate Muslim women as active observers and interpreters of the world, engaging with questions of faith, modernity, empire, and selfhood. In doing so, the anthology expands both the canon of travel writing and the archive of women’s history.

About the Editor:

Siobhan Lambert Hurley is a Professor of Global History at the University of Sheffield and one of the co-editors of the book, Three Centuries of Travel Writing by Muslim Women.

About the Moderator:

Urvashi Butalia is the co-founder of Kali for Women (1984) and  founder of Zubaan (2003), two of India's leading feminist publishing houses.
