Launch of Champaca Indiranagar: A Conversation with Harini Nagendra and Sharda Ugra | 6 April, 6 PM

book discussion new store launch

We are thrilled to announce the launch of Champaca Indiranagar, and what better way to kick it off than with an inspiring conversation between two extraordinary women who have made significant contributions in their respective fields: Harini Nagendra, a celebrated professor and author on ecology and sustainability, and Sharda Ugra, a renowned sports writer. They have also been a part of our journey and showed us their support since we started our first bookstore in 2020.

Harini Nagendra will be in conversation with Sharda Ugra. This conversation will take place on 5th April 2025 at 6 PM at our new Indiranagar store. You can RSVP to the event on this link.

While both Sharda and Harini need no formal introduction, we’ll share a bit about their remarkable journeys:

Harini Nagendra, a professor of ecology at Azim Premji University, is a well-respected scholar on sustainability. Her impressive body of work includes the award-winning NATURE IN THE CITY: BENGALURU IN THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE, and co-authored books like CITIES AND CANOPIES: TREES IN INDIAN CITIES which won the 2020 Publishing Next Award for Best Non-Fiction Book. Harini’s work has been internationally recognised, and she has made an indelible impact on both academic circles and the general public. Her debut crime novel, THE BANGALORE DETECTIVES CLUB, has been followed by sequels, including MURDER UNDER A RED MOON and A NEST OF VIPERS.

Sharda Ugra has been a prominent voice in sports journalism for over 18 years. Her career includes stints at the Mumbai tabloid Mid-Day, national daily The Hindu, and India Today. Sharda has also contributed to Radio Australia, worked on research commissioned by the British Sports Council, and earned awards from the Sports Journalists Federation of India (SJFI) for her exceptional sports writing. She’s also collaborated with former New Zealand cricket captain, John Wright, on his memoir JOHN WRIGHT'S INDIAN SUMMERS.

What to Expect at the Panel
In this special event, Harini and Sharda will be discussing the power of books, bookstores, and libraries in fostering a sense of community and connection in these times when loneliness and societal intolerance seem to be on the rise. Harini and Sharda will share insights about their personal reading and writing journeys, touching on everything from the role of literature in shaping society to their personal reflections on the books that have most impacted them.

And of course, we’ll be celebrating together- because at Champaca, we believe in the joy of coming together to celebrate stories, ideas, and people. Everyone is invited to join us throughout the day for a party, conversation, and celebration of the power of words to connect us all.
