About the book:

VAADIVAASAL- THE ARENA is a gripping graphic novel adaptation of a modern Tamil literary classic. This adaptation brings to life the intensity of Jallikattu, Tamil Nadu’s centuries-old bull-taming sport. Set in the famed Jallikattu events of Chellayipuram, the story follows Pichi, a young man seeking to tame the undefeated Kaari bull- the same beast that killed his father two years ago. As Pichi steps into the arena, the contest becomes more than just a test of strength; it is a battle of revenge, pride, and power.

About the speakers:
Perumal Murugan: One of India’s most celebrated contemporary writers, is known for his deep exploration of Tamil rural life, caste, and power. His works, including PYRE and POONACHI have received international recognition, and VAADIVAASAL remains one of his most compelling narratives.

Appupen: A Bengaluru-based graphic novelist and visual artist, is known for creating immersive and unconventional storytelling worlds. His works, including MOONWARD and ASPYRUS challenge traditional narratives, and in VAADIVAASAL his striking illustrations bring the raw energy of the bull-taming contest to life.

Samhita Arni: A writer and illustrator known for her reimaginings of Indian mythology, including SITA’S RAMAYANA and THE MISSING QUEEN, Samhita Arni will moderate the conversation, exploring the themes of the story.

This event offers a rare opportunity to hear from the creators about the intersection of literature, visual storytelling, and history in retelling a classic tale.
