Monuments are default testaments to the elite class, occasionally, the rules repurpose them, and even more rarely, the monuments consecrate the spirit, skill, courage and strength of the powerless. Bhima-Koregaon is one such rare monument. This is made more unique because it's message, meanings and stories are owned by the marginalized. A counter narrative that is impossible to be co-opted or erased by the ruling classes in the past or the present.

In committing to memorialize the courage and victory of ancestors, paying homage to the martyrs at Bhina-Koregaon and celebrating victory over a despotic regime, the present-day Dalits were made targets of violence of a far more depostic contemporary state. What is the connection between the ruling class in the region in 1819 and in 2018? Who are the people who are resisting the memory and who are the people who want to remember 1819? What does it say about the caste system?
