Time & Time Again is the first museum survey of photographs by Indian artist Jyoti Bhatt (b. 1934). It showcases a carefully curated selection of the most compelling images from Bhatt’s 50 year career. Alongside over 250 image reproductions, the book presents newly commissioned essays and republished texts by leading academics and scholars, including Annapurna Garimella, Geeta Kapur, Jyotindra Jain and Hal Foster, as well as texts on avant garde photography by artists including László Moholy-Nagy and Jyoti Bhatt himself. The book also includes a detailed timeline and bibliography on the artist, as well as reproductions of the artist's many journals, contact sheets and prints. Bhatt began documenting and responding to rural Indian culture in the 1960s, capturing the ways of life and craftsmanship that were at risk of vanishing. He went on to become one of the most innovative practitioners of modernist photography in South Asia, combining his interests in indigenous practice, the idea of forming a new and distinct Indian vision for the arts, his interest in the Bauhaus and later education in art schools in Europe and New York in the 1960s. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Indian government in 2021, and his work can now be found in the collections of the Tate Modern, London and MoMA, New York.
