Bibhutibhusan Bandyopadhyay (1894-1950) is one of the most significant novelists of the post-Tagorean period. Besides novels of such enduring such as Pather  Pancahli, Aparajita and Aranyak, he has written numerous short stories on varied themes. His writings are marked by a deep sense of empathy for the marginalised.

The stories presented in this selection mirrors the face of Bengal as it was at the beginning  of the 20th century. In these stories the reader will be a witness of the abject poverty as well as the beauty of the quiet countryside of Bengal, the peasants, the women-folk and young boys. Some of the stories are also set in Kolkata where the author had been a school teacher for many years. The stories involving ghosts and spirits has a strong appeal for children when they were first published several decades ago.
